Most (if not all) of us set a “get healthy” goal in January and now 2 months later are simply plain bored with the same ole workout plan.  If this is you or if you are in the category of people that deem “exercise” as a bad word, it is more than likely time to spice things up and think outside of the exercise box.

1.  Put on Your Dancing Shoes

Dancing is a great way to get your heart pumping and you can burn 200 to 400 calories in just a half hour of dancing.  Take a virtual class, use a video dance game, or just turn up the music and dance like there is no one watching!  It doesn’t matter how you dance just that you get to moving.

2.  Take Action

Signing up to volunteer with an organization to build homes, pick up litter, assist with a community garden, or coach sports teams is a great way to get some exercise while also giving back.  It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

3.  Climbing

Climbing is an excellent alternative for getting in a workout.  Whether at an indoor climbing gym (best option for beginners), in the great outdoors, or even at your local park.  Climbing helps build endurance, flexibility, & coordination for a full body & mind workout.

4.  Go On An Adventure

There are so many ways to get outside and adventure here in El Paso from biking & hiking, to just walking around your neighborhood.  For those who like a little “treasure” at the end geocaching may be for you.  Geocache apps send you coordinates to take you on either a physical or virtual scavenger hunt to get you moving and exploring new locations.  

5.  Play “Active” Video Games

“Active” Video Games are a great way to get some exercise in that doesn’t feel like exercise.  There are so many options ranging from sports to dance to even running from zombies.  Don’t have any “active” video games?  That’s ok…just make up your own active rules. Do 10 squats every time you die or play standing up or do 10 pushups for every level you pass.  The possibilities are endless.

6.  Take A Hike

Here in El Paso, we are surrounded by miles and miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to expert.  Hiking is good for both the body & the soul as there is something so calming about being out in nature.  You may even forget you are exercising…

7.  The Big Three

Lastly, there are the “Big Three” workouts to do outside of the gym running, cycling, & swimming.   All three are full body workouts that burn tons of calories and build up your strength, endurance, and flexibility.   They each vary in intensity and one may be better fit for you than the other.  People with bad knees may fare better with swimming instead of running.  Some may see running as the better endurance builder while others may seek the long distance pull of biking.  

There are tons of other ways to work on your fitness and incorporate exercise into your everyday life from deep cleaning the house or roughhousing with the kids to kayaking or goat yoga (look it up, its a real thing) .  At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how you get to moving.  It just matters that you do it.
